Darwin Fisk

Principal Architect & Founder, Open Data Designs

Twenty-five years designing data platforms for organizations that need them to work — not just organizations that can afford to wait 18 months for something that might.

Built on 25 years of production experience.

Darwin's career has spanned both sides of enterprise data: the operational systems that run organizations day to day, and the analytical architectures that tell leadership what's actually happening. That dual perspective — understanding how data is generated before designing how it's governed and reported — shapes every engagement at Open Data Designs.

He has led architecture and strategy at some of the largest organizations in healthcare, financial services, aviation, and retail. The common thread: complex data environments where the stakes of getting it wrong were real, and where the standard playbook of "buy a vendor tool and figure it out later" wasn't an option.

Darwin founded Open Data Designs on a premise those years reinforced: the organizations that most need strong data architecture are often the ones least able to afford the way enterprise consultancies typically deliver it. ODD exists to change that ratio.

Areas of Expertise

  • Data Vault, dimensional, and relational modeling
  • Enterprise data warehousing — Snowflake, SQL Server, Redshift, BigQuery
  • Governance, compliance, and security frameworks
  • Workflow automation and service management
  • Strategic planning and organizational enablement
  • AI-governed engineering practice development

The best data solutions don't just deliver insights — they enable the people using them to succeed without being dependent on outside consultants.

— Darwin Fisk

Enablement over dependency.

Most consulting engagements end with the client knowing less about their own systems than when they started. The consultant becomes load-bearing infrastructure — essential to keep things running, impossible to remove. Darwin built ODD specifically to work against that dynamic.

Every engagement is designed to increase your team's capability, not your reliance on ours. That means documented standards your people can follow, architectures built on a foundation any skilled practitioner can understand and maintain — whether they work in SQL, Python, or both — and hands-on training rather than black-box handoffs.

Darwin has trained report analysts into data engineers. He has taken people who could write clearly and taught them to build pipelines. The talent you need is often closer than you think — it just needs a framework and someone willing to teach.

Building a governed AI practice.

Starting in 2025, Darwin spent ten months building a complex multi-layer data platform — Snowflake, SQL Server, five database layers — with AI as a genuine engineering collaborator. Not a code generator. A partner in architectural reasoning, pattern enforcement, and sustained session-to-session continuity.

What he learned in that process became a governance framework: permission vocabularies, CLAUDE.md briefing documents, session continuity protocols, verification checklists. The same discipline that governed his data engineering work, applied to governing the AI that assisted it.

The experience produced both a methodology and an essay — The AI Bridle — which documents honestly what worked, what failed, and why human judgment remains the most important variable in any AI-assisted system.

The Governance Framework
  • 1Permission vocabulary — explicit language that distinguishes analysis from action
  • 2CLAUDE.md briefing documents — project context the AI reads before every session
  • 3Session continuity protocols — structured handoffs that survive context resets
  • 4Verification checklists — human review before anything ships
  • 5Documentation-as-infrastructure — decisions written down so they hold across sessions and tools

Core values.

🤝

Integrity & Transparency

Honest guidance and accountable delivery. We tell you what we see, including the things that are inconvenient to say.

🔓

Enablement

We build solutions clients can own and operate independently. Your capability grows. Your reliance on us diminishes. That is the goal.

💡

Innovation with Purpose

Practical, results-driven innovation. We adopt new tools and methods when they produce better outcomes — not because they are new.

🏘

Community Impact

Strong data infrastructure should not be the exclusive domain of large organizations. We actively serve nonprofits and mission-driven organizations.

🌱

Sustainability

Every system we design is built to minimize long-term cost and maximize in-house capability. We optimize for your independence, not our recurring engagement.

📖

Open Knowledge

We publish our frameworks and pipeline templates for non-commercial use. Sharing knowledge builds trust — and it is the right thing to do.

A practice built to grow.

Darwin leads architecture and strategy on ODD engagements. The development team is assembled to fit the work — that may mean training your existing staff, supplementing with ODD resources, or a combination of both depending on what the engagement needs.

The practice is designed to scale. Assessments and architecture can be followed by full implementation. Engagements that start with one team member can expand to match the scope of what you are building. Darwin's role is principal and lead — the team's depth is what makes larger engagements possible.

The longer-term vision: to make enterprise-quality data architecture accessible to every organization, regardless of size or budget — through direct engagement, an open framework, and a growing community of practitioners trained in methods that actually work.
